Self-Employed Joiner Receives Compensation After Accident at Work

A self-employed joiner has received £3,750 in compensation after being injured in an accident at work.

Mr X was attending a premises to collect materials for his next job when the accident happened. As he walked through a door, a piece of metal fell from the framework and struck him on the head causing a laceration and  later some muscular pain to his neck.

Mr X had to take time off from work as a result of his injuries which caused a loss to his business.

His claim was settled by Lisa Fairclough of Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Accident’s at Work Team, based in Sheffield.

She said, "The case emphasises the importance of businesses ensuring that their premises are properly maintained in order to prevent those using them being injured whilst going about their work.

"Luckily, the claimant did not sustain any brain injury as a result of the metalwork falling on his head, however, it could have been so much worse.  Nevertheless, it was a distressing experience causing him pain for a number of months afterwards and affecting his business, all of which could have been avoided through implementation of a proper maintenance regime."
