Staff nurse compensated for manual handling accident at work

A nurse has received £5000 compensation for injuries following a manual handling accident at work.

Ms G worked as a staff nurse at the time of the accident. It is believed that she sustained the injury because she had to lift heavy bags of fluid onto equipment for a patient’s treatment. This had to be carried out in cramped conditions, in an awkward position and no hoist was provided to assist with the lifting.

As a result of the injury, Ms G has had to change her role at work and her ability to do some of her household tasks and hobbies has been affected.

The case was settled before trial with help from Louise Morgan in Irwin Mitchell’s Accidents at Work team.

She said, “It is important that employers try wherever possible to remove or reduce the need for their employees to manually lift items by providing equipment to assist and thereby lessen the risk of injury.”
