Lifting Injury at Work leads to Compensation

Man injured at work from lifting without being provided with proper equipment

A man who was injured at work from lifting heavy objects has received £20,000 in compensation.

Mr X  was working as a  waste disposal operative when he severely injured his abdominal muscles in the accident.

At the time, Mr X was lifting heavy bags into a wagon. He had not been provided with a tail-lift which would have avoided him having to lift the bags to chest height and prevented the injury.

As a result of this, Mr X  has had to change his job to one involving only light duties  as he cannot be involved in any lifting activities.

His settlement was achieved with help from Lisa Fairclough of Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Work Injuries team in Sheffield.

Ms Fairclough said, “In this case Mr X’s job involved handling many bags each day. The job should have been assessed and risks associated to manual handling either eliminated or reduced to their lowest level.

“Had proper assessments been undertaken and the employer taken heed of the assessment it would have been evident that the wagon the claimant was using should have had a tail-lift and his injury at work could have been avoided.”
