Industrial Accident caused by Inadequate Training
Industrial accident compensation case
A man has received £120,000 compensation after suffering physical and psychological injuries in an industrial accident.
Mr X worked unloading lorries when he was asked to carry out duties outside of his normal role.
He was asked to operate a pillar drill and had done so only once before and had received no training or instruction on its use.
The drill became jammed on a piece of wood and Mr X tried to knock the piece of wood off the drill and, in doing so, caught his glove in the drill causing his hand to be pulled in.
As a result of the accident, Mr X suffered severe physical injuries but also significant psychological injury.
Primary liability was admitted by his employer and the claim was settled by Sally Rissbrook of Irwin Mitchell’s specialist Industrial Accident team.
She said, “Mr X had not received any training in how to use the drilling equipment.
"The accident could easily have been avoided had the appropriate instruction and supervision been given."
