Head injury at work caused post traumatic illness

A man who suffered post traumatic illness after suffering a head injury at work has received £13,750 compensation.

Mr C suffered head injuries, which led to the illness, whilst working as a JCB mechanical loading shovel driver in a warehouse.

Mr C had been loading coke onto a conveyor to be transported onto ships at the time of the accident. Visibility in the warehouse was extremely poor and, whilst reversing his vehicle, Mr C struck the wall of the warehouse, causing him to hit his head on a rail within the cab and injuring his shoulder.

Following the accident, Mr C developed very severe post traumatic headaches requiring medication prescribed by a neurologist.

The settlement was achieved before trial with help from Louise Morgan of Irwin Mitchell’s Accidents at Work team in Sheffield.

She said; “Mr C’s employers failed to provide him with a safe place of work as they had not taken appropriate steps to improve the visibility within the warehouse. Neither did they put systems in place whereby the drivers would be warned that they were approaching the walls of the warehouse.

“All employers have a duty to provide a safe environment for their employees. This was clearly lacking in Mr C’s case."
