Leeds Based Law Firm Donates High Visibility Tabards To Local Schoolchildren

Law firm aim to prevent road traffic accidents

05/11/2007

The Leeds office of national law firm Irwin Mitchell has joined forces with Leeds City Council's Road Safety Promotion Unit and national charity BRAKE during this weeks Road Safety Week campaign.

This year's campaign focuses on reducing the number of deaths and injuries suffered by child pedestrians on their way to school and also aims to help increase the safety of young cyclists. Irwin Mitchell has donated 240 high visibility tabards to the Road Safety Promotion Unit for use in their training across the Leeds area.

The tabards are designed to ensure that drivers clearly see children crossing the roads and they will also be given to children who complete the Unit’s cycling training. Carolyn Heaton from Irwin Mitchell said: "Recent studies* have revealed that a child is hurt or killed whilst walking or cycling every 37 minutes on UK roads. As personal injury lawyers we see the devastation that road traffic crashes have on victims and their families which is why we wanted to do something positive to try and make our roads safer."

Carolyn, along with representatives from the Road Safety Promotion Unit and BRAKE will be visiting the Pudsey Waterloo Primary School on Tuesday November 6, in order to hand over tabards and view the new Zebra crossing which has just been installed. Training will also be delivered to the children on pedestrian safety.

* Statistics from GB figures in Road Casualties Great Britain 2006 (Department for Transport, 2007) and figures obtained by Brake from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (2007)
