Norfolk Helicopter Crash
16/07/2002
Families of 11 men who died when the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter they were traveling in plunged into the North Sea are considering legal action in a fight for compensation.
Irwin Mitchell has been retained to represent some of the families in what is likely to be a group litigation case.
The tragedy has been blamed on mechanical failure with one of the helicopter rotor blades recovered found to have a manufacturing anomaly that weakened it. This was then weakened even further as a result of a lightning strike in 1999. It is reported that neither the damage nor the anomaly were detected in inspections carried out by Sikorsky.
