Irwin Mitchell Expands London Disputes and Human Resources Teams

14/10/2008

Law firm Irwin Mitchell’s London office has strengthened its Business and Private Client practice by appointing Jeremy Marshall as a Commercial Litigation Partner in its Disputes team and John Hayes to lead the Human Resources team in the City.

Irwin Mitchell is one of the top litigation practices in the country and the 5th largest with more than 80% of its £145m turnover coming from litigation. Its business and private client Disputes practice has 25 partners leading teams in London and regionally specialising in commercial litigation, human resources, public law, insolvency, fraud, professional negligence, banking, pensions and financial services, trusts, debt recovery, insurance, regulation, compliance, tax and other investigations and other contentious work.

Profile cases range from heavyweight fraud and insolvency matters such as the John “Goldfinger” Palmer timeshare fraud to the vitamins cartel litigation and a string of headline public law cases. The firm acted for the RNIB in a challenge to the decision to refuse NHS funding for macular degeneration drug Lucentis; for the British Medical Association in a challenge to the government’s decision to reverse the agreement reached with GPs as to the method of calculation of their pensions; and most recently in the victory for Colin Ross against West Sussex PCT in relation to the availability of cancer drug Revlimid.

The London based debt recovery practice has led the field for more than a decade and the London office has a strong reputation in tax investigations, business crime and regulatory work. The contentious teams work alongside the firm’s corporate transactions, commercial and property teams.

Peter Wylde, Head of Irwin Mitchell’s Business and Private Client Group, said:

"John and Jeremy are both commercially minded, pragmatic lawyers with excellent experience whose skills and initiative in business development neatly complement our established presence in London. They will add significantly to our litigation and human resources capability and support our growing commercial and transactions business in the City."

Jeremy Marshall, a Cambridge graduate, trained and spent 10 years at Lovells, and became a partner with City firm Bracher Rawlins LLP before joining Irwin Mitchell. He has worked in New York and the Cayman Islands.  Jeremy has extensive experience in fraud, insolvency, corporate investigations, shareholder redress and banking litigation. He is married and lives in Central London.

Jeremy said: "I am excited by the challenge presented by my new role. My overriding priority will be to develop Irwin Mitchell’s London commercial litigation practice in line with the strengths and formidable reputation it already has in the market.  It is a reputation which, I believe, can achieve an even greater exposure in the corporate arena."

John Hayes was previously a partner with Davenport Lyons and before that he was, Head of Employment at, coincidentally, Bracher Rawlins. He is a dual qualified barrister and solicitor and an experienced advocate, having trained at 8 King’s Bench Walk.

John has particular interest in the Recruitment and Construction sectors.

John said: "I relish the challenge to develop a leading employment law practice in the London market for one of the leading law firms in the UK. There are exciting opportunities to capitalise on the profile of the national Human Resources group and the depth of IM’s resources available to clients.

"I intend to build on my existing client base and contacts and to produce new business with a particular focus on servicing the needs of small businesses and entrepreneurs."

Away from work, John is a member of the Scottish Malt Whiskey Society and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. He speaks good Spanish, having lived in Peru for a year, and is an Arsenal season ticket holder.
