Inquest Opens into Leeds Actor’s Death
David Nicholls mesothelioma case
24/11/2008
An inquest is due to open at 2.15pm on Tuesday 25th November at Leeds Coroners Court, Belgrave St, into the death of 58-year-old local actor, David Nicholls.
David Nicholls died in June this year after being diagnosed with mesothelioma in May 2007, a cancer that affects the external lining of the lungs and usually results from inhaling asbestos fibres.
Mr Nicholls, who lived in Armley, was a larger-than-life character and his stage presence was well known particularly because of his distinctive 6ft 5in height. He played roles in films such as Gladiator and Gangs of New York and also had parts in TV soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street.
It is believed that David was exposed to asbestos in his teens whilst working at a Beans Industries factory in Tipton, West Midlands.
Ian Bailey partner and industrial diseases expert from Irwin Mitchell in Leeds, representing David’s family said: “David was cut down in the prime of his life, just when he was enjoying the benefits of a successful acting career with his family.
"Sadly, his death illustrates the growing trend of asbestos-related deaths that are a result of deadly working conditions that existed in the UK for years during the sixties and seventies.
"Little was done about it and now people are dying as a result of both direct and indirect exposure up to fifty years later.
"David was extremely passionate about raising the profile of this deadly disease to the public – he made a very emotional speech at the National Action Mesothelioma Day at Leeds Town Hall in February this year."
Mr Nicholls leaves behind his long term partner Julie Connor and three sons Jai, James and Sam.
