Careless Driving

21/08/2008

The driver of a lorry which caused the death of a Rotherham man has today been sentenced to six and a half years at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to careless driving.

Currently an average of eight people per day die in road crashes nationwide, while in 2007, 48 people were killed on the roads in South Yorkshire.

Mr Peter Jolley, (38), from Rotherham, was killed whilst driving his Rover 214 to work at C&D Industrial Services, Mansfield Woodhouse on November 7, 2007.

The father of two was killed in a head-on collision with a Ford transit box van being driven by Mr Raj Mohammed Anwar Khan on Packman Road, Rawmarsh, Rotherham. Mr Khan, who was driving a Northern Dairy Company lorry, lost control of the vehicle whilst negotiating a bend in the road. His lorry crossed onto the opposite side of the road into the path of Mr Jolley’s car.

Nicola Meese from law firm Irwin Mitchell who is representing Mr Jolley’s family said:

"This was a truly tragic incident which resulted in the death of a loving father. Our sympathies go out to the family and we hope that this case will highlight the impact of that careless driving can have upon others."

Peter’s partner, Lindsey Moule added: “Nothing can ever bring back Peter and my children, Elliott who is seven and Regan who is just two, will have to grow up without their father.

"We are disappointed by the sentence given in Court today which we feel is not sufficient to reflect the loss, pain and suffering that my children and I face every day."
