We’re experts in prison law

Our public law team has considerable experience in cases relating to prison law and prisoners' rights. We have gathered knowledge and experience from many leading, precedent setting cases in this area, some including substantial challenges to penal policy. For example, our work has resulted in restrictions on politicians’ power to decide the length of time life imprisonment should mean in individual cases.

We are members of The Criminal Appeal Solicitors Association.

About prison law

Prison law looks after the rights of prisoners. Our prison law team draws on a very specialised experience and on the expertise of the firm more broadly to support prisoners through the parole process, including representation where necessary, and at disciplinary hearings. We will also act in cases where there has been some kind of miscarriage of justice, or to ensure that a prisoner’s categorisation is appropriate. We also represent families who are party to coroners' inquests, whether those which relate to deaths in police or prison custody, or relating to deaths in other circumstances.

Legal Aid will usually cover the costs of a case for prisoners and is sometimes available to cover representation of families at coroner’s inquests.
