Action Mesothelioma Day in Liverpool

A large group of people assembled in the main chamber at Liverpool Town Hall to remember all those affected by mesothelioma, call for better services for victims and campaign to raise asbestos awareness among workers against the risks of asbestos. The public meeting was organised by the Merseyside Asbestos Victims Support Group (MAVSG) and the Cheshire Asbestos Victims Support Group (CAVSG).

The meeting was chaired by Mrs Jean Howard from the CAVSG and opened by remarks from Civic Dignitaries. Amongst those present were the Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool, The Mayor of Wirral, The Mayor of Warrington, The Mayor of Halton District Council, and Councillor Michael Foulkes representing Knowsley Borough Council. The Civic Dignitaries stated that they would ensure asbestos was dealt with according to the protocols within each of their constituencies.

Dr Chris Warburton, Consultant Chest Physician, from Aintree Hospital Trust spoke briefly about each of the asbestos diseases, paying particular attention to mesothelioma. He noted that cases of people suffering with mesothelioma were on the increase and this was expected to peak around 2015.

John Flanagan from MAVSG spoke of the role and work of the CAVSG and MAVSG. He said that the aims of the support groups were to offer support to those bereaved through mesothelioma, raise awareness of the risks of asbestos and campaign for research into the disease.

Ms Helen Ratcliffe, HSE Officer and Policy Adviser to the Dust Disease Reduction Programme spoke of the concerns regarding the amount of asbestos still located in construction sites. Union representatives confirmed that workers were still regularly exposed to asbestos whilst working in the construction industry.

Following the meeting, a sponsored balloon release by the Civic Dignitaries and children from Holy Cross School was held at the rear of the Liverpool Town Hall in Exchange Flags.
