Action Mesothelioma Day in Birmingham

Alida Coates, partner for Irwin Mitchell led a commemoration of past and present clients at Birmingham Cathedral on Wednesday 27th March to mark the third annual Action Mesothelioma Day.

In front of friends and families Alida paid tribute to all those who had lost their battle with mesothelioma. She was joined by Margaret Worthington, a former school teacher who herself suffers from mesothelioma and Gwen Hoult who lost her husband Derek five years ago as a result of mesothelioma, who together with her daughter Karen Wright have fund raised more than £16,000 for the June Hancock Memorial Fund.. The day was a symbol of hope and remembrance, and to honour this, doves were released from the churchyard.

Alida commented “Although there is hope for the future, we have seen an increase in the number of people like Margaret Worthington who worked in jobs, not usually associated with heavy exposure to asbestos and who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. These include teachers, hospital staff and family members exposed to asbestos dust on their loved ones clothing.”
