Paitent Suffers Stroke

18/07/2008

A plastic surgeon who regularly appears on Channel 4 reality show 10 Years Younger has agreed to pay a six-figure sum to a patient after she suffered a stroke on his operating table.

Diane Newbould, 53, from Sheffield, was left in need of lifetime care after undergoing a facelift by Surgeon Jan Stanek.

Dr Stanek, who is based in Wimpole Street and has a private clinic in Chiswick, west London, was accused of not taking into account that Mrs Newbould was obese, a heavy smoker and had previously suffered from bronchitis and hypertension.

Six years on, Mrs Newbould still has speech problems, has limited comprehension skills and is prone to "emotional and psychological difficulties".

Mrs Newbould sued the doctor and the anaesthetist involved in the operation, claiming that the negligence has ruined her life.

At a High Court hearing, Mr Justice Cranston approved the settlement of Mrs Newbould's case and Dr Stanek's lawyers agreed on his behalf to pay her compensation without admitting liability.

The exact amount of the payment was not revealed but Janet Baker, solicitor for Mrs Newbould, said it was "a significant six-figure sum" and would be invested in her future medical care.

Dr Stanek is considered one of the leading surgeons in his field and is well known around the world after featuring in the Channel 5 series, Plastic Fantastic, as well as the popular Channel 4 show.
