Plane Incident with Tractor

One man dead in plane crash

30/10/2008

A man was killed and another seriously injured when a light plane crashed into a crop spraying tractor at an airfield. The tractor driver, aged in his 60s, escaped serious injury when the plane hit the vehicle at about 1350 GMT on 29th October 2008 at Seething Airfield, south of Norwich.

The East of England Ambulance Service said officers found two men, believed to be in their 50s, in the plane. One was confirmed dead at the scene. The other man suffered "significant head and chest injuries". He was flown to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital where he was described as being in a critical condition.

Andrew Hill, the driver of the tractor, walked away from the crash but was treated for shock. A spokesman for Seething Airfield said the two-seater aircraft was coming in to land when it collided with an agricultural vehicle spraying crops.

The debris field suggests the aircraft collided with the crop-spraying tractor before it hit the ground. The tractor was not on the runway and there was no suggestion the tractor was not authorised to be where it was. Norfolk Police said it was investigating the crash along with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).
