Graphite electrode cartel

Graphite electrodes are ceramic-molded columns of graphite used primarily in the production of steel in electric arc furnaces.

Electric arc furnace steelmaking is essentially a recycling process whereby scrap steel is converted into new steel. The intensity of the melting process means that approximately one electrode is consumed every eight hours. There are no product substitutes for graphite electrodes.

On 18 July 2001, a decision of the EC Commission found that the following companies had engaged in anti-competitive practices and conspired to fix and maintain prices at artificially high prices;

  • SGL Carbon
  • UCAR International Inc
  • VAW Aluminium AG
  • Showa Denko K.K.
  • Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd
  • Nippon Carbon Co. Ltd
  • SEC Corporation
  • Carbide/Graphite Group, Inc

We would like to hear from anyone who purchased graphite electrodes from the above companies during 1992 to 1998. If so, you may have been overcharged and may be entitled to compensation. However, you will need to act quickly to stop legal time limits from defeating any potential claim.

If you would like to register an interest in the action and would like to find out more, without obligation or charge, please contact us.
