On 28 February 2001 the Land Rover of Gary Hart, a self-employed driver from Lincolnshire, veered off the M62 near Selby and came to rest on a railway line. Shortly afterwards a GNER Newcastle-London express collided with the vehicle, derailing the passenger train and sending it into the path of a freight train travelling in the opposite direction.
Ten people were killed in the disaster, including four train staff, and many more were injured. Hart was subsequently convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced to five years imprisonment.
