Irwin Mitchell has assisted a young woman to obtain compensation after she was knocked down by a car on her way to university.

Our client suffered a fractured spine in October 2007. She was on her way to lectures when she was hit by a car which pulled out into her path through a line of stationary vehicles. She underwent surgery to fuse her spine at the site of the fracture.

At the time of the accident our client was studying to be a PE teacher and was a keen sportswoman. As a result of her injuries and the ongoing physical limitations that resulted from the accident, she was forced to give up her studies and career plans.

Eventually, our client was able to return to many of pre-accident activities, but she has had to seek out a new career. She now plans to embark on a career in the NHS where she can put her own experiences to good use in the care of others.

Her injuries resulted in a delay in her entering the workplace and, though her new careers will eventually mean she will earn a similar salary to what she would have earned as a teacher, the delay in starting work has caused an ongoing loss of earning on a year on year basis until she is able to catch up.

Irwin Mitchell's specialist Serious Injury Team in Leeds assisted her to obtain £147,000 in compensation for the injury as well as to reflect both past and future losses caused by the accident.
