Being an employer

Being an employer

Unless you have operated a business in Spain before, you will probably assume that as we are all part of the EU, your obligations as an employer in Spain are very similar to those your have here in the UK. Or, if it is your first business venture, you will probably treat your employees how you have been treated (or would like to have been treated) in the UK.

This is a logical approach to take, but it could unfortunately land you in legal hot water.

In Spain, an employer’s obligations to their work force are very different to the UK. In Spain the legislation is much more rigorous and applied more strictly.

As you will know from high profile cases in the UK, getting it wrong can not only have an immediate and direct impact on your business, but in the long term can earn your business an unwanted reputation, making it difficult to employ good quality staff. This situation is no different in Spain. The strong oral culture in Spain means that word of mouth can result in significant damage to a business in the community where it chooses to trade.
